What to Expect Onboard

How long is the sailing experience?

All sails are 2.5 hours depending on wind conditions and guest preferences. Sunset cruises time the return to coincide with the best golden hour light. Afternoon sails maximize time under full sail during optimal wind. Private charters can be customized for different durations.

What time do sunset cruises depart?

Sunset cruise departure times change seasonally to ensure you're on the water during golden hour and sunset. Summer departures (June-August) are typically 6:00-6:30 PM. Winter departures (December-February) are 4:00-4:30 PM. Spring/fall are 5:00-5:30 PM. Exact times are confirmed when you book.

What time do afternoon sails depart?

Afternoon sails typically depart 12:00-2:00 PM to catch San Diego Bay's reliable afternoon sea breeze. Exact departure times are confirmed at booking and optimized for the best wind conditions that day.

Where do we meet?

We depart from afe Harbor Sunroad Marina in San Diego, slip location provided in your confirmation email. The marina is centrally located with easy access from downtown San Diego, the airport, and major hotels. Free parking is availableon the street. Paid Parking avaiable at the marina.. Detailed directions and parking instructions are included in your booking confirmation.

What should I wear?

Casual, comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are recommended—San Diego Bay can be breezy, especially during sunset. Flat, soft-soled shoes or sandals (no heels). Bring a light jacket or sweater even in summer. Hats and sunglasses are recommended. Sunscreen is essential!

Can I bring my own food and drinks?

California white wine and packaged snacks are included. Guests are welcome to bring beer or white wine if they wish. Red wine and hard alcohol are not permitted onboard. Additional food such as sandwiches or snacks is welcome.

Is there a bathroom on board?

Yes! The Liberty has a private marine head (bathroom) below deck—a rare and appreciated feature on a 30-foot sailing vessel. It's clean, functional, and well-maintained.

Can I help sail the boat?

Absolutely! Captain Phil loves teaching guests about traditional sailing. You're welcome to take the helm,or learn to trim them. Or simply relax with wine and enjoy the views—it's entirely your choice!

Will we actually sail, or just motor around?

The Liberty actually sails— on every journey. Unlike many "sailing" charters that run engines constantly, we raise sail immediately after leaving the dock and sail under wind power throughout your experience.

Weather & Cancellations

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety is our top priority. If conditions are unsafe (high winds, thunderstorms, poor visibility), we will cancel and offer a full refund or free reschedule to any available date. Captain Phil monitors weather closely and will contact you 12-24 hours before departure if conditions look questionable.

How much wind is too much wind?

The Liberty sails beautifully in 8-18 knot winds (our optimal range). We can sail comfortably up to 20 knots, but above that conditions become uncomfortable for guests. Below 5 knots, we may need to motor-sail to ensure you have a great experience.

What if there's no wind?

San Diego Bay has reliable afternoon and evening sea breezes year-round. In the rare event of no wind, we have an auxiliary diesel engine to ensure you still enjoy time on the water. We'll do everything possible to maximize sailing time, but calm days are uncommon.

Do you sail in the rain?

No,why get wet and have an uncomfortable experience. Captain Phil will reschedule or refund your purchase.

What if I need to cancel due to illness or emergency?

We understand emergencies happen. Contact us as soon as possible at (619) 889-5988. While our standard cancellation policy applies, we're flexible and compassionate about genuine emergencies. We'll work with you to reschedule when possible.

Can I reschedule instead of canceling?

Yes! Rescheduling is always easier than canceling. If you contact us 2+ days before your sail, we'll move your booking to any available date with no penalty. Last-minute rescheduling (less than 2 days) is subject to availability, but we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Safety & Comfort

Is sailing safe?

Absolutely. Captain Phil is USCG-licensed with over 15 years of experience. The Liberty exceeds all Coast Guard safety requirements and we have maintained a spotless safety record since 2015 with over 10,000 guests. We carry all required safety equipment including life jackets, fire extinguishers, and first aid supplies.

Do I need to wear a life jacket?

Life jackets are available in all sizes. Per California law, they are required for children under 13. Adults are not required to wear them unless conditions warrant it, but they are always easily accessible. Captain Phil will provide a full safety briefing before departure.

Is the Liberty stable? Will it tip over?

The Liberty is extremely stable thanks to her wide 10-foot beam and 3,000-pound lead keel. While she may lean (heel) slightly when sailing—which is normal and efficient—the design ensures she will never tip over or capsize under normal conditions.

Can children sail on the Liberty?

Yes! The Liberty is excellent for families. We welcome children as young as 2 years old. With life jackets for all sizes, a stable platform, and a private bathroom on board, we ensure a comfortable and educational experience for kids.

What's the minimum age?

We recommend age 2+ as the youngest practical age. While infants are welcome if parents are comfortable, please keep in mind that the 2.5-3 hour outdoor environment can be challenging for very young babies.

Is the Liberty wheelchair accessible?

Unfortunately, the Liberty's traditional design includes steps and narrow passages that make wheelchair access difficult. Guests must be able to step down approximately 2-3 feet from the dock into the boat. Please call us at (619) 889-5988 to discuss specific mobility needs.

What if someone in my group has mobility limitations?

As long as guests can step down 2-3 feet to board and sit comfortably in the cockpit (which has supportive backrests), they will be fine! The Liberty's stability makes it easier for people with balance concerns than many other boats.

Are pets allowed?

Well-behaved dogs are welcome on private charters only (not shared sails). There is a $25 pet fee. Dogs must be non-aggressive and under control at all times. Please contact us in advance to arrange a pet-friendly charter.

Groups & Special Occasions

Can I book multiple boats for a large group?

The Liberty accommodates 6 guests maximum per sail. For larger groups (7-12 people), we can often arrange back-to-back charters or multiple departure times on the same day. Contact us to discuss the best options for your group.

Is the Liberty good for bachelor/bachelorette parties?

Yes! Private charters are popular for these celebrations. The intimate setting is perfect for close friends. We just ask that groups remain respectful of the vessel—this is a classy sailing experience, designed for elegance and quality time.

Can we celebrate birthdays aboard the Liberty?

Absolutely! Birthdays are one of our most popular events. You're welcome to bring a cake, decorations (within reason), and special beverages. Private charters give you complete control to make the day truly personal and memorable.

Do you host wedding-related events?

  • Proposals & Engagements - Romantic and unique settings

What's the best experience for experienced sailors?

Experienced sailors love afternoon sails for the authentic 8-18 knot breezes and the chance to appreciate the Liberty’s traditional gaff-rigged design. Private charters allow you to take the helm and dive deep into traditional techniques with Captain Phil.

How old is Liberty?

The Liberty was built in 1975. She's a faithful interpretation of the classic Friendship sloop design, combining traditional aesthetics with modern materials and safety features. Captain Phil restored her extensively from 2014-2015.

Where did the Liberty come from?

The Liberty sailed the Atlantic coast before Captain Phil discovered her in the Great Lakes in 2013. He had her hauled across the Rocky Mountains to San Diego in 2014—an epic 2,000-mile overland journey! After arriving, she underwent an 18-month restoration.
