Booking & Pricing

How do I book a sail?

You can book online through our website, call us at (619) 889-5988, or email info@sandiegosailingadventures.com. Online booking shows real-time availability and instant confirmation. Phone and email bookings are confirmed within 2-4 hours during business hours.

How much does a sunset cruise cost?

Sunset cruises are $115–$135 per person depending on season and day of week. Peak season (May-September) and weekends are typically $85-95 per person. Off-season weekdays (October-April) are $75-85 per person. All pricing includes premium beverages, snacks, and 2.5-3 hours aboard the Liberty.

How much does an afternoon sail cost?

Afternoon sails are $115–$135 per person depending on season and day of week. This includes premium beverages, light snacks, hands-on sailing instruction, and 2.5-3 hours of authentic sailing during San Diego Bay's best wind conditions.

How much does a private charter cost?

Private charters range from $450-600 for the entire boat (up to 6 guests). Standard 2.5-hour charters start at $450. Extended 3-4 hour charters with premium beverage packages are $550-600. You're paying for complete exclusivity, not per person.

What's included in the price?

All sails include:
  • USCG-licensed Captain Phillip
  • Premium beverages (local craft beer, California wine, champagne, soft drinks)
  • Light snacks (cheese, crackers, fresh fruit)
  • All safety equipment and life jackets
  • Hands-on sailing instruction (if desired)
  • 2.5-3 hours aboard the Liberty
  • Unforgettable memories and stunning photos!

Do you offer discounts for large groups?

For groups of 5-6 people, private charters often provide better value than individual tickets. We occasionally offer seasonal promotions—sign up for our email list or follow us on Instagram @sailliberty for special offers.

Are gift certificates available?

Yes! Gift certificates are available in any amount and make perfect gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, or special occasions. They never expire.

What's your cancellation policy?

Guests may cancel or reschedule:
7+ days before sail: Full refund or free reschedule
3-6 days before sail: 50% refund or free reschedule
Less than 3 days: No refund, but we'll work with you on rescheduling.

Weather: If we cancel due to unsafe weather, you receive a full refund or can reschedule.

How far in advance should I book?

Sunset cruises often book 2-4 weeks in advance during peak season (May-September). Afternoon sails typically have more availability. Private charters should be booked 3-6 weeks ahead. Last-minute? Call (619) 889-5988.

What to Expect Onboard

How long is the sailing experience?

All sails are 2.5 hours depending on wind conditions and guest preferences. Sunset cruises time the return to coincide with the best golden hour light. Afternoon sails maximize time under full sail during optimal wind. Private charters can be customized for different durations.

What time do sunset cruises depart?

Sunset cruise departure times change seasonally to ensure you're on the water during golden hour and sunset. Summer departures (June-August) are typically 6:00-6:30 PM. Winter departures (December-February) are 4:00-4:30 PM. Spring/fall are 5:00-5:30 PM. Exact times are confirmed when you book.

What time do afternoon sails depart?

Afternoon sails typically depart 12:00-2:00 PM to catch San Diego Bay's reliable afternoon sea breeze. Exact departure times are confirmed at booking and optimized for the best wind conditions that day.

Where do we meet?

We depart from Harbor Island Marina in San Diego, slip location provided in your confirmation email. The marina is centrally located with easy access from downtown San Diego, the airport, and major hotels. Free parking is available. Detailed directions and parking instructions are included in your booking confirmation.

What should I wear?

Casual, comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are recommended—San Diego Bay can be breezy, especially during sunset. Flat, soft-soled shoes or sandals (no heels). Bring a light jacket or sweater even in summer. Hats and sunglasses are recommended. Sunscreen is essential!

What should I bring?

Recommended items:
  • Sunscreen (reapply before boarding)
  • Sunglasses and hat
  • Light jacket or sweater (layers!)
  • Camera or phone for photos
We provide: California white wine and packaged snacks are included. Guests are welcome to bring beer or white wine if they wish. Red wine and hard alcohol are not permitted onboard. Additional food such as sandwiches or snacks is welcome.
Please don't bring: Glass bottles, red wine, excessive luggage, or anything you'd be upset about getting wet.

Can I bring my own food and drinks?

California white wine and packaged snacks are included. Guests are welcome to bring beer or white wine if they wish. Red wine and hard alcohol are not permitted onboard. Additional food such as sandwiches or snacks is welcome.

Is there a bathroom on board?

Yes! The Liberty has a private marine head (bathroom) below deck—a rare and appreciated feature on a 30-foot sailing vessel. It's clean, functional, and well-maintained.

Can I help sail the boat?

Absolutely! Captain Phillip loves teaching guests about traditional sailing. You're welcome to take the helm, help raise sails, or learn to trim them. Or simply relax with wine and enjoy the views—it's entirely your choice!

Will we actually sail, or just motor around?

The Liberty actually sails—100% wind-powered on every journey. Unlike many "sailing" charters that run engines constantly, we raise sail immediately after leaving the dock and sail under wind power throughout your experience.

Weather & Cancellations

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety is our top priority. If conditions are unsafe (high winds, thunderstorms, poor visibility), we will cancel and offer a full refund or free reschedule to any available date. Captain Phillip monitors weather closely and will contact you 12-24 hours before departure if conditions look questionable.

How much wind is too much wind?

The Liberty sails beautifully in 8-18 knot winds (our optimal range). We can sail comfortably up to 20-22 knots, but above that conditions become uncomfortable for guests. Below 5 knots, we may need to motor-sail to ensure you have a great experience.

What if there's no wind?

San Diego Bay has reliable afternoon and evening sea breezes year-round. In the rare event of no wind, we have an auxiliary diesel engine to ensure you still enjoy time on the water. We'll do everything possible to maximize sailing time, but calm days are uncommon.

Do you sail in the rain?

Light rain or drizzle doesn't stop us—sailing in light rain can be beautiful and peaceful! However, thunderstorms, heavy rain, or poor visibility will result in cancellation for safety. San Diego's Mediterranean climate means rain is rare, especially May-October.

What if I need to cancel due to illness or emergency?

We understand emergencies happen. Contact us as soon as possible at (619) 889-5988. While our standard cancellation policy applies, we're flexible and compassionate about genuine emergencies. We'll work with you to reschedule when possible.

Can I reschedule instead of canceling?

Yes! Rescheduling is always easier than canceling. If you contact us 3+ days before your sail, we'll move your booking to any available date with no penalty. Last-minute rescheduling (less than 3 days) is subject to availability, but we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Safety & Comfort

Is sailing safe?

Absolutely. Captain Phillip is USCG-licensed with over 15 years of experience. The Liberty exceeds all Coast Guard safety requirements and we have maintained a spotless safety record since 2015 with over 10,000 guests. We carry all required safety equipment including life jackets, fire extinguishers, and first aid supplies.

Do I need to wear a life jacket?

Life jackets are available in all sizes. Per California law, they are required for children under 13. Adults are not required to wear them unless conditions warrant it, but they are always easily accessible. Captain Phillip will provide a full safety briefing before departure.

Is the Liberty stable? Will it tip over?

The Liberty is extremely stable thanks to her wide 10-foot beam and 3,000-pound lead keel. While she may lean (heel) slightly when sailing—which is normal and efficient—the design ensures she will never tip over or capsize under normal conditions.

Can children sail on the Liberty?

Yes! The Liberty is excellent for families. We welcome children as young as 2 years old. With life jackets for all sizes, a stable platform, and a private bathroom on board, we ensure a comfortable and educational experience for kids.

What's the minimum age?

We recommend age 2+ as the youngest practical age. While infants are welcome if parents are comfortable, please keep in mind that the 2.5-3 hour outdoor environment can be challenging for very young babies.

Is the Liberty wheelchair accessible?

Unfortunately, the Liberty's traditional design includes steps and narrow passages that make wheelchair access difficult. Guests must be able to step down approximately 2-3 feet from the dock into the boat. Please call us at (619) 889-5988 to discuss specific mobility needs.

What if someone in my group has mobility limitations?

As long as guests can step down 2-3 feet to board and sit comfortably in the cockpit (which has supportive backrests), they will be fine! The Liberty's stability makes it easier for people with balance concerns than many other boats.

Are pets allowed?

Well-behaved dogs are welcome on private charters only (not shared sails). There is a $25 pet fee. Dogs must be non-aggressive and under control at all times. Please contact us in advance to arrange a pet-friendly charter.

Groups & Special Occasions

Can I book multiple boats for a large group?

The Liberty accommodates 6 guests maximum per sail. For larger groups (7-12 people), we can often arrange back-to-back charters or multiple departure times on the same day. Contact us to discuss the best options for your group.

Is the Liberty good for bachelor/bachelorette parties?

Yes! Private charters are popular for these celebrations. The intimate setting is perfect for close friends. We just ask that groups remain respectful of the vessel—this is a classy sailing experience, designed for elegance and quality time.

Can we celebrate birthdays aboard the Liberty?

Absolutely! Birthdays are one of our most popular events. You're welcome to bring a cake, decorations (within reason), and special beverages. Private charters give you complete control to make the day truly personal and memorable.

Do you host wedding-related events?

The Liberty's beauty makes her perfect for:
  • Proposals & Engagements - Romantic and unique settings
  • Rehearsal Dinners - An intimate alternative to restaurants
  • Elopements - Coordination with officiants available
  • Anniversaries - Renewing vows or celebrating milestones

What's the best experience for first-time sailors?

Afternoon sails are ideal! They offer the best wind conditions for performance and a hands-on opportunity to learn sailing basics. Sunset cruises are also magical, though they are usually more focused on the ambiance and romance.

What's the best experience for experienced sailors?

Experienced sailors love afternoon sails for the authentic 8-18 knot breezes and the chance to appreciate the Liberty’s traditional gaff-rigged design. Private charters allow you to take the helm and dive deep into traditional techniques with Captain Phillip.

About the Liberty

What kind of boat is the Liberty?

The Liberty is a 1904-style Friendship sloop—a classic American sailing design. She's 30 feet long with a traditional gaff-rigged sail configuration, hand-crafted teak woodwork, and timeless maritime elegance. She's the only 1904 Friendship sloop sailing San Diego Bay.
Learn more about the Liberty →

How old is the Liberty?

The Liberty was built in the 1904 Friendship sloop style (modern construction from the 1980s-1990s). She's a faithful interpretation of the classic design, combining traditional aesthetics with modern materials and safety features. Captain Phillip restored her extensively from 2014-2015.

Where did the Liberty come from?

The Liberty sailed the Atlantic coast before Captain Phillip discovered her in the Great Lakes in 2013. He had her hauled across the Rocky Mountains to San Diego in 2014—an epic 2,000-mile overland journey! After arriving, she underwent an 18-month restoration.

How many people fit on the Liberty?

Maximum 6 guests plus Captain Phillip. This intimate capacity ensures everyone has comfortable seating, personal attention, and space to move around freely. The Liberty never feels crowded—this is a premium, intimate sailing experience.

Does the Liberty have a motor?

Yes, the Liberty has an inboard diesel engine used only for maneuvering in and out of the marina. Once we clear the harbor, we raise sail and sail under wind power alone. The engine is a safety backup, but we're committed to authentic sailing.
